About Flying Fish

Everything you ever wanted to know about our new home

After over a year of searching for a blue water sailing catamaran, “Pure Harmonie” appeared on the market. It was a Thursday, and after a video tour of the boat with the owners, we made a full price offer on the spot – even though we were in Colorado and the boat was in Montenegro. We rallied and bought airline tickets for Peter to go see the boat, along with a Marine Surveyor that we had hired from Barcelona, and the boat broker who came from Marseilles, France. The survey turned out well, but with a few items to be addressed (as one would expect with an eleven year old boat – like replacing the standing rigging (the cables that hold the mast up)).

Leopard catamarans are made in South Africa by Robertson and Caine. Ours had gone to Croatia for a few years in charter, followed by a Canadian buyer who renamed it “Legend” and did a lot of custom work on it. After that, another Canadian couple bought the boat and renamed it “Pure Harmonie”. We bought Pure Harmonie and have now renamed it “Flying Fish.” If you know anything about boat renaming, it’s a big deal – mostly for superstitious reasons, but there are also legal steps to take. More on that in another post.

Catamarans have two hulls, two diesel engines, and two rudders. In between all that is a saloon and cockpit that contain the “dining room” and “galley” inside and a back cockpit with lounging space and dining table. This boat is unique since it also has a front cockpit which is a great place to hang out when the view or sun orientation is better from the front. Another great feature with catamarans is the “trampoline” out front which is great for sunning, jumping or hanging out and watching the stars on a clear night. Flying Fish is 12.98 meters long, 7.25 meters wide and has a draft of 1.3 meters. The mast is 68 feet tall.

Each hull has two cabins and two electric “heads” (marine bathrooms) complete with showers. There are also two “coffins” in the front of each hull that technically could be sleeping space for crew or kids, but they’re pretty claustrophobia inducing, so there are shelves built in the port side for tools and spare parts and we store a collection of cushions, a couple of uninflated SUPs and a box of real glass wine glasses in the starboard side. There are a lot of additional hidden storage spaces and we keep discovering things we didn’t know we had like an inflatable kayak, a guitar, a wet/dry vac, a collection of ropes/lines of various configurations, wet suits, and more.

Our cabin is on the port side at the rear of the boat. The back cabins are a little larger and have three windows/hatches for good ventilation. My office is the forward starboard cabin – I chose the cabin as far away from our cabin so my late night zoom calls won’t wake up Sarah. Just like home, there are multiple screens, laptops, mic, green screen – everything except for the comfortable desk chair. The folding chair I’ve been using to date just doesn’t hack it after 8 hours of zooming, but it’s what fits. Sarah’s office in the aft starboard cabin houses her a) sewing machine, fabric, notions and patterns, b) knitting needles, notions, and yarn, and c) watercolor painting supplies. There’s almost room for the extra bedding under the bed and the dehumidifier.

Underneath our bed is a 700 liter diesel fuel tank and our watermaker – an incredibly complicated device that combines a series of filters and membranes with two pumps to produce about forty gallons of fresh water out of sea water every hour. This system works on 220 Volt AC power, so we need to run the generator or have shore power to make it work, but having it is a great luxury since we have something like 780 liters of water storage and that would be a lot to carry from shore by hand. We also have a washing machine/dryer – a wonderful luxury since we don’t have to haul our dirty laundry across the marina and tend to it while it goes through the wash cycles. Or wash anything by hand. A washing machine on board was pretty high on our list of must haves: if the boat hadn’t come with one, we’d have had one installed within a couple of weeks of moving here.

Our galley came fully kitted out with dishes, silverware, utensils, pots and pans, an air fryer, espresso machine, and soda stream. We also have a small fridge and freezer, a gas oven and stovetop. We have augmented this fully equipped galley with a collection of knives, wooden spoons, spices and more that we brought from home. It almost goes without saying that Sarah has a large stash of New Mexican red chile tucked into the freezer.

The boat has heating and air conditioning which is great to have in winter – and will be equally valuable in summer. We’ve never been on a boat when it’s cold out and weren’t even sure if the boat had heating, so it was a pleasant discovery that the AC works as a heat exchanger and can be run to heat up or to cool off the boat. We also found a couple of space heaters in one of the front cabins that can augment the heating as needed. Our favorite addition was our down comforter – Sarah would also add our hot water bottles – which has kept us toasty even on the nights when the temps dipped below freezing.

Many second hand boats come equipped with gear, tools, and basic equipment. But everywhere I look there are things I never expected to be included in any boat we bought, and we’re extremely lucky both with the vessel itself, and the generosity of the former owners.

For the sailing geeks out there, here is a complete list of specs.
